Live Simply

Back to the grind today.....

Last week was Spring Break, and I spent the week at our hunting cabin in rural Northeast Missouri doing practically nothing- and it was bliss!  We have little to no cell service and no internet, just a bunch of DVDs, a few games and family.

I had planned on doing so many things last week. I packed 15-20 books (seriously), my crocheted afghan I've been working on, my yoga books and mats to practice some class sequencing with my family.  But none of that happened- and I'm quite okay with that. I spent a lot of quality time and shared meals with my family and cherished every moment of it.  My parents were able to join us for the week as well as one of my sisters. My aunt, grandma, middle sister and her two boys, and neighbors all visited throughout the week. I played catch with my son, board games with my daughter, fell more in love with my husband. Moments I wouldn't trade for an expensive vacation anywhere in the world.

I did read Matthew McConaughey's book, Greenlights, which is quite introspective. Matthew gained my attention in A Time to Kill, and I'm sure the rom coms of the 2000s. I've always admired his ability to be his self.  He is a great storyteller and his book is entertaining yet induces reflection.  A couple of points he made struck me. One being to be good at one thing at a time. I tend to want to accomplish so many things and right now. We have to give ourselves the grace to find the balance, focus on the present task, do well and table the others until time allows- and it will- if not it wasn't really that important.

I dog eared a few pages in the book, and took a screenshot of one titled: "Why we all need a Walkabout".  The jest- we all need time in the quiet, to tend to ourselves so we can be better in civilization when we return. (His version is very poetic of course- but you'll have to read it for yourself).

We live in a crazy busy world. We take on too much. We have too many material possessions. SO MUCH NOISE!

What can you do to live more simply?

Can you take a mini "walkabout" daily or even weekly to provide you with some introspect and grounding?

I know I personally need to and will continue to work on this, but I can tell you that my simple week away from all the connected chatter, with those I love was one of the best weeks I've had in a long time, possibly ever.

And I am so grateful.
